Talk Confidently with Your Child about Sex

Terry W. Reese • January 5, 2020
According to the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals, 68% of individuals with sexual addictions come from a rigid disengaged family system. You might be asking yourself...so what system did you grow up in? Well, I grew up in a single parent household with a mother raising four children...so I fell into the category of a mostly disengaged family system. I leaned about sex from a compilation of sources such as cable television, siblings, friends and pornography. It was confusing, unhealthy, and inappropriate. This also laid the foundation for me being a vulnerable host for addictions in later years.

If children do not learn about sex from their parents then they will learn about sex from somewhere else, worst of which is pornography. As a father of three, I prefer my children learn about sex from their mom and dad. As such, I greatly appreciate using Concordia Publishing House, "How to talk Confidently with your Child about Sex" A Guide for the Christian Family for Parents series. They are divided into age appropriate ranges, which give a parent a guide of when to cover specific topics. These books cover everything and they're awesome because they help to open a healthy child/parent dialogue. There are also secular age appropriate sex education books out there for non-Christians, but there is such a variety one would be better off doing their own search to find what works best for their family. I embedded a link to Concordia's books into the picture.
